| Home | ENDVIEW – Enhanced Display Viewability using High Efficiency Advanced LED Backlight Arrays The readability of displays in variable lighting conditions is a pervasive problem for the display manufacturing community. There are many situations where the equipment position is fixed and the display must still be readable, particularly for complex images in high and low brightness ambients in aerospace, marine and ATM sectors.
There are opportunities offered by LED lighting of displays to enhance the readability of the display image, together with improvements in power efficiency. Guided by end-user requirements from GE Aviation Systems, Raymarine, NCR Financial Solutions Group, representing aerospace, marine and ATM sectors respectively, the tasks of developing the LED backlighting, coating and optical guiding solutions will be undertaken by GE Aviation Systems – Newmarket, Thin Film Solutions and Design LED Products respectively. The fundamental work to develop methods to assess the readability of complex images on displays in variable lighting conditions requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving human factors studies, display measurement and modelling, which will be provided by the University of Abertay Dundee, NPL and the University of Greenwich respectively. The fundamental knowledge gained in the project will be disseminated through events organised with the UK Displays and Lighting Network and through NPL input into generating end-user guides and standards. The ENDVIEW project team consists of the following partners:
The project is supported by the TSB Technology Programme under the “Lighting, Lasers and Displays” Theme. Related Links: Technology Strategy Board: www.innovateuk.org UK Displays and Lighting Network: www.ukdisplay.net |
